La Scala Debut in Adès’ The Tempest
This November, Isabel Leonard makes her highly-anticipated house debut at the revered Teatro alla Scala as Miranda in The Tempest. With music by Thomas Adès and a libretto by Meredith Oakes, this celebrated opera premiered at London’s Royal Opera House in 2004 to great acclaim and is now recognized as one of the leading works of the 21st century. Ms. Leonard first sang the role of Miranda in this production’s debut at The Metropolitan Opera in 2012, which was broadcast to cinemas across the world and is still available to stream through the Met Opera on Demand service.
In this inventive and suitably located production, Robert Lepage sets Shakespeare’s adapted story at the La Scala theatre, with the magician, Prospero, acting in the vein of an opera ‘impresario’ and manipulating the other characters’ behaviour throughout the plot. Led under the baton of the composer himself, the esteemed cast also includes Leigh Melrose as Prospero, Audrey Luna as Ariel, Frédéric Antoun as Caliban, Josh Lovell as Ferdinand, Toby Spence as Alonso, Robert Murray as Antonio, Kevin Burdette as Stefano, Owen Willets as Trinculo and Paul Grant as Sebastian.
Performances take place on November 5, 8, 11, 15 and 18.
