‘Phineas McBoof Crashes the Symphony’
The Doctor Noize albums are theatrical-type musicals, featuring colorful characters that carry the narrative along from song to song. Cullinan’s latest is “Phineas McBoof Crashes the Symphony.”
The double CD, which introduces children to orchestral music, is a wondrous, highly entertaining exploration. It will be available on July 15 on iTunes, CDBaby and Amazon, as well as at Doctor Noize shows. More than half of the costs for the album were covered by Bay Area donors. Cory Cullinan’s mother, Lee, still lives in Los Altos and was among those who supported the new album. A successful Kickstarter campaign validated Cullinan’s belief in the concept . . .
Opera stars Isabel Leonard, Nathan Gunn and John McVeigh, and jazz saxophonist Anton Schwartz, performed on the album. Gunn, who has played the character Placido Flamingo since the first Doctor Noize album, is married to the daughter of Cullinan’s childhood piano teacher.
