Carmen in Santa Fe
This summer, Isabel Leonard makes a thrilling return to Santa Fe Opera as the titular character in Georges Bizet’s fiery opera, Carmen. Ms. Leonard made her SFO debut in 2008 as Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro and has since returned for their productions of Cold Mountain and Vivaldi’s Griselda.
In this new production, director Mariame Clément brings a modern take to this operatic warhorse with a spotlight on the psychological trauma from the abusive relationship between José and Carmen under the backdrop of Julia Hansen’s breathtaking scenic and costume designs. The stunning cast will also feature Matthew White (July performances) and Michael Fabiano (August performances) as Don José, Michael Sumuel as Escamillo, Sylvia D’Eramo as Micaëla, David Crawford as Zuniga, Luke Sutliff as Dancaïre, Anthony León as Remendado, Darren Lekeith Drone as Moralès, Kathleen Felty as Mercédès and Magdalena Kuzma as Frasquita. The renowned conductor Harry Bicket leads these performances.
The run will take place from July 1 to August 27.
